Jennifer Blake: turkey chili & french bread

turkey chili & french bread

February 16, 2012

This past weekend was cold, and it was supposed to be snowy, but once again mother nature let me down! Since Saturday was supposed to be cold and yucky out, I thought it would be the perfect day to use the crockpot and make some chili! I went to the store earlier in the week and got everything I thought I would need. I wasn't sure if I was more excited to eat the chili or how it would make the apartment smell!

I looked up a bunch of recipes and combined a few to make mine!

Turkey Chili
1 lb ground turkey
1 red pepper
1 green pepper
3 Tbs chili powder
1 can of kidney beans
1/3 C. tomato paste
1 can diced tomatoes with jalapeƱo peppers
1/3 C. tomato sauce
1 medium white onion
3 cloves garlic (minced)
Salt and Pepper to taste
Grated cheese sprinkled on top before you eat!

It was so so simple, I first cooked the turkey on the stove, and then I cut up everything and threw it all into the crockpot. I set the crockpot on low and let it cook for 6 hours.

While that was cooking in the crockpot I whipped together a loaf of french bread, it came out pretty good for my first time making it!

French Bread

2 TBL. Dry Active Yeast
2 TBL. of Sugar
3 Cups of warm water.
1 TBL Sea Salt
4 Cups of Unbleached White Bread Flour
2 Cups of Unbleached Whole Wheat Bread Flour

I mixed the yeast, water, and sugar and let it sit for 5 minutes (until it gets frothy). Then I mixed the dry ingredients and mixed both the wet and dry together. I put it in the fridge for about 4-5 hours and let it rise. I then rolled it into loaf form and popped it in the oven for 20 minutes @ 400F. I used my hands to mix and kneed the dough, since I don't own a fancy kitchen aid mixer and it came out delicious!

It was the perfect comfort meal on a cold day! And it made the house smell delicious!
